Angels In The Halls

Red head angel standing in corridor of old house

The five AM alarm sounds
She wakes and groans to greet the day
And when she drives into town
She wonders who they’re gonna lose today
Five days a week for all these years

Mothers fathers sons and daughters
Watch their loved one through their tears
She feels her own eyes water

And there are angels in the halls
The souls ascend to the ceilings
Ancestors watch from the walls
But oh that lonely feeling
Of those left to stay behind

She sees them in denial
Cant let them slip away
She watches as they try
To grasp the past for one more day

She doesn’t have the answers
She holds the tears inside
SHe helps them with the handprints
But late at night she cries

And there are angels in the halls
The souls ascend to the ceilings
Ancestors watch from the walls
But oh that lonely feeling
Of those left to stay behind

Sometimes their dying thoughts are tossed
oft resigned but too oft yearning
of battles won and lovers lost
lessons taught but left for learning
Closing chapters to their story
Curtains drawn, house lights on
These aren’t tales of fame and glory
But ordinary lives gone

And there are angels in the halls
The souls ascend to the ceilings
Ancestors watch from the walls
But oh that lonely feeling
Of those left to stay behind
Of those left to stay behind
